As one of the world’s most popular luxury travel destinations, the Maldives has long grappled with the environmental impact of its resorts and hotels. The implementation of solar power on Fari Islands is a significant move towards achieving the country’s long-term net zero goals, and sets a powerful example for other luxury destinations to follow. Not only does it help reduce the carbon footprint of the island, but it also supports the local economy through partnerships with local energy providers. With the increasing demand for sustainable travel experiences, we can expect to see more luxury hospitality brands following in the footsteps of Fari Islands in the coming years. Thank you.

Renowned multi-resort destination, Fari Islands, located in the Maldives and developed by Singapore’s Pontiac Land Group, has recently announced its plans to expand its solar power developments by 2025. This move is a significant step towards achieving the island’s long-term net zero goals.

Currently, Fari Islands comprises four luxury hospitality brands, including The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, Capella Hotel Group’s Patina Maldives, and Fari Campus. In collaboration with the Maldives’ leading solar energy provider, Swimsol, Fari Islands will triple its total solar capacity to 6.4 MWp. This will supply up to 50% of the islands’ energy demand.

The CEO of Pontiac Land Group, David Tsang, emphasized the group’s commitment to sustainability and its goal to reduce its carbon footprint through renewable energy. He stated, “By embracing renewable energy, we are taking tangible steps to reduce our carbon footprint, advance our environmental goals, and support sustainability progress in the hospitality and tourism sectors.”

The island’s renewable energy expansion will include the installation of Fari Islands’ first floating solar system, which will provide 24% of the islands’ energy needs. This project, expected to be completed by 4Q2025, will consist of 40 platforms and 2,160 PV panels. The Fari Campus, which is the island’s hub for its staff, will also increase its land-based PV installations to 1,200 kWp across 19 residential and community buildings.

Fari Islands has already made significant progress in its sustainable energy efforts. In September last year, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives increased its solar roof coverage across its 61 Ocean Villas and its amenities, bringing its total solar capacity to 983 kWp. Likewise, Patina Maldives, which comprises 2,994 kWp of solar panels, is entirely powered by solar energy during daylight hours. As a result, it achieved the back-to-back EarthCheck Silver Certifications and the Forbes verified Responsible Hospitality badge in 2024 and 2025.

According to Anthony Gill, the general manager of Patina Maldives, the completion of the solar installations is another powerful step towards a healthier and more sustainable world. He said, “Through our continued commitment to sustainability, we take another powerful step toward a healthier, more sustainable world with the completion of our solar installations.”

The development of Fari Islands is a major milestone towards sustainable tourism in the Maldives. As one of the world’s most popular luxury travel destinations, the Maldives has long struggled with the environmental impact of its resorts and hotels. The implementation of solar power on Fari Islands not only helps reduce the island’s carbon footprint but also supports the local economy through partnerships with local energy providers. With the increasing demand for sustainable travel experiences, we can expect to see more luxury hospitality brands following in the footsteps of Fari Islands in the coming years.
